HOT OFF THE PRESS!!!

You read it here first another COSP Exclusive scoop!!
The Handlebar cover overlay Part#043017-01 RevB

Here's a piece thats been talked about for years but never really got any traction until recently.
Ok technically this would be the 2nd next to Brian's beautiful System 2 SideArt available at gamestencils.com
I was contacted by Chris25810 if I had any interest in Paperboy repros, such as the Handlebar overlay and Cpo
I've been asked about these more than any other game but the problem was no one has been able to scan or provide me an original to work from let alone trying to find an unapplied NOS piece
But strangely not even an inkjet of either piece was ever produced to my knowledge.
these pieces have somehow eluded the hobby like the ark of the covenant to Dr Jones.
So why haven't these pieces ever been repro'd??
Well for starters the cover is on a curved surface so scanning is rather difficult the same is true for the Cpo with welded obstructions making scanning impossible without sacrifice.

Well you cant make an omelet without breaking some eggs, so lets get cracking...

Recently there have been numerous projects from KLOV and the BYOC on Paperboys and there was fixin to be another
So I thought Id look into doing these again. First I did a basic search to see if any art, scans, or vectoring had happen since the last time I had looked into it. I didn't find anything specific I did stumble across a semi recent restoration thread over on the BYOC and to my surprise he not only was local to me he had even been by the shop to pick up some vinyl for you guessed it
A Paperboy restoration, which I didn't even know at the Time.
I contacted him about borrowing the cover, and after a few emails got it back to the shop and went right to work.

the majority of the art was all done by measurements alone
a few scans of some areas to match the font and lettering spacing.

and I sample line art print on clear acetate to check for accuracy

WTF!!!
or what the font?
So next up was to match the font which can always be difficult and hard to believe with over 3,000 fonts on file
I didn't have a match.
So I thought Id take another shot using the website whathefont.com which I had never had much luck with
mainly due to the fact that most of the font matches I needed for cpos were too small and distorted to get good enough results.
But then I had remember seeing in some of the game manuals partially Ataris that they would use the same font in the heading and chapters and a quick search proved to payoff. With nice big bold black and white letters this was the perfect test

a quick cleanup and crop it was ready to upload and low and behold had a match in just a few short seconds.

The font was Bramley which will also be used on the cpo (more on that later)
Bramley was a commercial font and special thanks to Jeff Rothe for helping me acquire it to put the finishing touches on this piece and within the hour had the art done and color separated and ready for print
once everything was in place it was an easy screen with all 3 colors fitting on the same screen and ran them over the weekend

Richard,

Your paperboy repro products are immaculate. (I just bought both overlays for my Paperboy project cabinet when Richard and I were both at California Extreme last weekend.) Now if I could only find an old system II cab to move my poor Paperboy kit out of the Defender cab it was installed in back in the 80s...

That is/was NEPs handlebar cover overlay and I picked up on his vector art to put the finishing touches on it and then compare to a scan and physical Cpo I got from Chris you really help put the gears on this.
It really helps when a handful a people can get help out and get a project together. it really speeds up the process. especailly when I dont have a PB
Ill be posting a new entry very sooon on the Cpo.

No, actually it was me that provided the control panel for Rich. Actually, i slooooowly peeled the cpo off and sent it to him to play with.

Very cool Rich! I'm assuming that was Steve (NeverendingProject) that provided the control panel for you to use. I actually did a little welding on his control panel so I guess it's been making the rounds here in the Portland area. I hope to have a Paperboy one of these days so it's great to know that artwork is available now!

This is sweet, and oh so timely for me.. I *just* got my Paperboy out of storage--and it has been sitting there for about 8 years!
