yesterday was a sad arcade day. My girlfriend threw a party and as the arcade is always a hit so I had everything fired up. anyway I come into the basement later to find asteroids deluxe with half the screen collapsed... so I got sad then turned it off. then later I come back to the unmistakable smell of "some kind of electronics are buring smell".. in terror I directly look over an my tempest... sure enought the screen is completely black the game is and hissing and that unmistakable smell is coming from it.. now I'm really depressed.

today I booted asteroids deluxe back up and everything is back to normal, so I"m assuming that the heat either causes a temporary connector failure or a temporarly failure with the transistors. either way probalby will rebuild it soon. Glad though that it is working.

My tempest works (plays blind), but there's a definite hissing and bright white light eminating from the monitors HV unit. (Havne't taken it apart yet to see what's burning) hopefuly this will get fixed easily. I have a 6100 total rebuild kit laying around so now just got to find some time to disassemble everything and rebuild, I hope that the damage did not burn anything on the game board we'll see once it's disassembled.

It's been about a year since I did any electronics work on any games so I suppose it was about that time.

Bummer Brian. I think we all know that feeling. It happened to me twice last month!

  • I invited a couple of pinball friends over recently to play our recent grail pinball purchase, Medieval Madness. A couple of games in they start complaining the castle intermittently is not registering hits. Then they realize other switches aren't being triggered intermittently as well! That is going to take some troubleshooting to resolve.
  • We threw a going away party for a good friend who was moving out of state for a while. I was excited to show off my new Candy Cab with hundreds of games on it to my friends. That day my 1.5 year old got a hold of some settings buttons and erased all of the games. I didn't have time to restore my backup of the hard drive before the party, so became that large new thingy in the corner instead of the impressive and fun arcade it was supposed to be.

Oh well, such is our life. ;-)

I dont know why but i always have this in the back of my mind that a catastrophic failiure could happen durring the time of some entertaining event. But since i havent had any such events yet, its not so bad. Im sure its a good idea to have a pre check as a preventive measure to save from embarasment of something breaking down during the event. But none the less, it is a sad thing to have happen : (

Well I guess I'm not the only one.. guess it comes with the territory.

I'm feeling better now that I"ve had some time to relax, now it's just a matter of getting everythign up and running again.
I just disassembled the tempest HV cage and it's the flyback, it's hissing and smoking and you can see an intense (but small) bright the light from inside. so have an order in for 2 new flybacks (one for this one, one for my "backup" monitor... jut in case I need it in the future) looks like I'll have fun couple weeks of game repair. Now that I've got my game room out of wack and my repair tables up and setup, might as well do some work on this and a few other things I've been holding off on doing.

ended up being that the flyback on tempest burned a hole through itself, got a new one in there and it's looking good, now just waiting for my high voltage probe adaptors to come in so I an properly adjust the HV output to try to ensure it doesn't happen again.
