Jeff,
How can you tell if you have read a message or not? Also, when you open a discussion, it defaults to the first message. Is there a way for it to open to the first unread post?

There isn't a way to 'mark' a discussion as read, or have the forum test to see what posts you have or haven't wrote. I know BYOAC doesn't operate this way either, but that UBBThreads does something with cookies to see what you have or haven't seen.

Now, if you start using an RSS feed reader to track all posts, you have mark away in there what you have or haven't read, and you'll never miss a new post.

Hmm? Actually, BYOAC does it as well, as do most modern forum systems. On BYOAC, just click the "new" next to a topic and it'll take you to your first unread post. To update all posts as having been read, click the "mark as read" button at the top of the topic list.

I was surprised that ning didn't have these features to start, and it could make scanning for new topics pretty tough on a site with a high level of traffic. Hopefully they'll incorporate em soon, though.

I did not know this....and still don't see a link called 'new' either in the category view or from within the category itself. Screenshot?

It may be nice for Ning to incorporate....but RSS works better for that anyway.
