I picked up a Arkanoid II: Revenge of Doh cab and converted it back to it's original Pac-man

Here is what I started with:
PhotobucketPhotobucket

Back door was in rough shape so a new one would need to be cut
Photobucket

Wire harness was all hacked up to add in the jamma board.
Photobucket

Monitor had a horizontal collapse issue, but the screen burn was so bad I decided to replace it with a new monitor
PhotobucketPhotobucket

No decals for this one. It's getting the full treatment...stencils
Photobucket

Cab is going to need a lot of work.
Paint chipping all over
Photobucket
Deep scratches in the side
Photobucket
Beat up edges all over
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Holes in the cab
Photobucket

First step was to strip the cab down. See...it really was a pac-man:
Photobucket
Coin door is going to need a bit of work
Photobucket

Completely stripped the cab down to the bare wood and cut a new backdoor
PhotobucketPhotobucket

After some heavy bondo sessions, primer coats were added
PhotobucketPhotobucket

At the same time, metal parts were stripped down for painting
PhotobucketPhotobucket

I swapped my Arkanoid control panel with someone for a pac-control panel
Photobucket
A heat gun made quick work of the old overlay
Photobucket
Stripped down to the bare metal and some bondo work on some extra holes
Photobucket
and then a coat of primer
Photobucket
A few coats of Rustoleum Satin Black and then it was ready for the new overlay
PhotobucketPhotobucket

I sand blasted the coin door to get it down to the bare metal
PhotobucketPhotobucket
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Textured black paint and cleaned up all the parts
PhotobucketPhotobucket

This is my first time using automotive paints on a cab
Photobucket

Painted the inside area black
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Then I was ready for three coats of yellow
PhotobucketPhotobucket

I used a toothbrush to apply the blue speckles and then was ready for the stencils

Red first
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Photobucket

Then blue
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Photobucket

Then black
PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
PhotobucketPhotobucket

new orange t-molding added
Photobucket

Time to put it all back together
PhotobucketPhotobucket
PhotobucketPhotobucket

Added in Mark Spaeth’s Six Pac
Photobucket

And the (almost) finished product
Photobucket

Still need to replace the marquee with a NOS one I have (haven’t had the time to remove the stuck on paper covering yet) and permanently attach the new logo plate on the coin door (waiting for the correct rivets)

Amazing job, that machine looks beautiful. How many total hours do you think it took to do the resto? I have yet to take on a project like this, but in looking at what you have done here and what other people are doing on other restos, it looks well worth the time.
No idea on how much time. It took about a year to complete, but that is working on it as I find time. I usually do one or two restorations a year. Spend the Winter months working on getting them playable and then the Summer months working on the cosmetics. The stencils took a lot of time but it was well worth it. This one is getting an end spot in the arcade to show off the work.

I really enjoy bringing the ones back to life that most people would trash.
Nice job...looks incredible! I can't wait to finish mine someday. I've had it sanded and prepped for paint for a few years now in the corner of the garage. I finally got some stencils to get it done.
wow.. that is awesome!

Very nice!!!
Indeed ! this is a very nice restore. Iam very happy to see people have this passion to return games to there former glory. Fantastic job ! Our hats off to you sir.
Beautiful job Spyridon!
How did u find the Auto paint application and finish? Used a HVLP gun I gather?
Yes, I used a HVLP gun. The auto paint went on better than any other paint I have used. Quick dry time and perfectly smooth application. The down side is the paint cost $380 just for this cab! I did struggle with the clear coat. Really added a lot of orange peel over what was a perfectly smooth finish. I was able to buff it out, but it took some work.

I see you went back to add a second go round of blue splatter, mostly because someone else showed photos of the density...

Don't plan on doing a Pac-man myself, but if I did, the only question I would have is about that speckle. For arugments sake, it almost seems as though the only method is to use a toothbrush, and it does a 90% authentic job of replicating that speckle, but it would seems like the dots are much smaller when you have to stand back that far. The original dots, some of them, are actually a decent size.

Did anyone else suggest a way to compensate for that? Maybe a brush with thicker bristles, or even less bristles. Don't really know....

Why did you choose to thin the paint for the speckle? Did it not flick at all without thinning?
Are you going to put a couple of stickers on those EEPROMs?
Oh, and do you know about how long it took? Did you happen to time the whole process?
I think its fair to say that the automotive paint is choice to use when painting your cabinet : )
