I have a Tron cab that I'm attempting to restore. This is the only arcade I've ever owned and so the first time I've tried to restore one. Maybe I should have tried a different cab first to get some practice. Everyone says that Tron is a very expensive machine to restore. Holy pockets in my jeans, Batman!! Everyone is correct, but since this one of my favorite arcade games ever it is worth the expense. I'm not planning on selling it. Plus, my daughters love playing it. I have spent several hours every night for the past week working it. I started by cleaning it. Then I started slowly taking everything off of the cab. I am taking a ton of pictures so I will remember how it all goes back together. A big bonus for me on this cab is that the cab itself was in really good shape. No water damage and only minor holes and chips that had to be patched up.

Tearing it down.

Stripping the artwork off. I used a heat gun for the CPO. I tried the heat gun for the sideart, but that made the cab to hot and was really slow. I ended up using Citristrip. That did the trick.

Patching holes and such.

I primed with two coats of Kilz primer. Sanding inbetween coats.

I applied the first coat of black last night. I'm getting nervous with it. I hope it starts looking better with the next coat.

I got the CPO on today. It was actually pretty easy. I took the player 1 and 2 buttons and put them in the holes to line everything up. I locked them down and started removing the backing from left to right. No problems with air bubbles, and it only took a few minutes from start to finish.

Great start, that's for sure. I would have almost just left it...the game looked pretty nice other than the sideart wear. Are you painting that by hand and not with an paint gun? If so, that's why it looks the way it does. If you must paint by hand at least use a roller specifically for smooth surfaces. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm painting by hand. I do have a real good foam roller. I've just sanded and prepped the cab for a second coat of black. The pictures I took was right after I applied the first coat. It toned down a lot after it dried. Sanding helped as well. My wife wanted me to leave the Tron alone as well, but when I looked at it I just new what it could look like. I do have an HVLP spray gun, but I don't really have the setup where I am to paint it with that. If the second coat doesn't smooth out like I want then I may have to figure a way out to hit it with the spray gun. Well, the longer I'm sitting here typing the less I'm getting done on the Tron. I'm heading out for paint coat #2.

Wow, I painted the second coat of black tonight and it really looks good. I think one more coat of paint is probably needed. I was nervous after the first coat of black because the roller marks were showing pretty bad. I am using an additive for the paint called Penetrol that is supposed to make the paint lay flat. It really does help.

Great work so far! Tron was my first restoration as well, it was like learning to swim by diving into the deep end! Here's my worklog, which may help if you need any reference images when putting your back together: http://driph.com/words/tag/tron/

Be sure to pick up a new handle from groovygamegear, the difference when up against the blacklight is amazing.
