Ok every one , i would like your tips, tricks ,do's, dont's on applying a conrol panel overlay. this will be my first try and i would like to make it perfect so i would love to hear what you have to say . my project is an asteroids cpo, i will be stripping and repainting the cp then applying the cpo. should i use the "wet" method or...???
the new overlay is .006inch lexan with a sticky backing. i will be painting the cp with a semi flat black.

The best result I've found was to apply dry. Remove old overlay with scrapper, heat gun and a little elbow grease, sand with angle grinder, paint and apply the overlay as follows. Line up overlay with backing on the prepared panel and clamp a small board 1x1 across the middle. This eliminates misalignment. Start at the top and start applying by cutting backing at top with a razor blade about 1". When cutting backing fold back, then cut backing away from the overlay. Remove clamped board, and continue to work your way down cutting off backing little at a time as you go and working the overlay with you hand smoothing from one side to another to minimize bubbles. I like the idea on the paper towel rolls to help line up the holes also. Good luck with your project.

Long live the classics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, today i did the deed. it went very well. i used water and cardboard tubes to align everything. i also got a hold of a handy little squeege tool that has a felt cover over one end to protect the lexan from scratches. it took a little bit to align everything, but the water made reapplying the cpo easy. it seems the holes were not cut out to mach the cutouts in the control panel so this made things a bit more difficult. but overall it turned out perfect (no bubbles, scratches or miss alignment).
these are the tools i used.

here the water and tubes are used and im ready to apply the cpo

after a few trys... i laid it down and sqeezed out all the water starting from the center and working my way outward, and then moved up and down ,side to side removing as much water as i could.

here is the final result. it looks great !! i cant wait to reinstall the finished control panel. im still waiting for buttons to arrive in the mail.

Looks very nice man! I went the same wet route with my Centipede CP and it worked out very nicely as well.

Does this overlay have a smooth texture or rough texture feel ?

it has smooth texture to it. but rougher than the one i pulled off. it is also about twice as thick as the one i pulled off
it is not as shiny as the old one but it looks and feels very durable.
